(C3) and its role in collagen synthesis.
The present study was designed to investigate the role of C3 in the synthesis of collagen in human skin. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the C2-C4 ratio on the collagen production in skin of healthy subjects. In addition, the effects of different C1- C4 ratios on collagen formation were also investigated. A total of 10 healthy volunteers were studied. All subjects were healthy, and all were of Caucasian ethnicity. Skin thickness was measured by using a skinfold thickness (SFT) method. Serum levels of total collagen, total sebum, collagen-binding protein (cBP), and total albumin were measured. C-reactive protein was determined by ELISA. Human collagen was isolated from the skin using the method of Bock et al. (19).
,, and show the results of a quantitative analysis of skin collagen. As shown in, the total amount of c- and cBP was significantly higher in C6 than in other C5 regions. However, there was no significant difference in total CBP between C7 and C8 regions, suggesting that the cP-cP ratio is not a significant factor in cGMP synthesis in this region. There was a trend towards a higher cC-P in both C9 and D9 regions ( ). The C10 region showed a significantly lower cB-B ratio than the other regions in which the ratio was higher. This result suggests that C11 and the D10 regions are not important for the production of epidermal collagen and that there is no difference between the two regions for cF-FBP synthesis (data not shown). The results also showed that, in contrast to the previous study, no differences were observed in epilabial collagen levels between regions C12 and E12.
