The first step is to make the gelatin. You can use any type of gelatin, but I prefer to use gelatin from the grocery store. I use a small amount of the liquid from a can of crushed tomatoes. The liquid is then mixed with a little water and then the rest of your ingredients are added. This is the main ingredient in the recipe. It is important to add the water to the mixture so that the gelatine is completely dissolved. Once the ingredients have been added, the dough will be very sticky and will not rise. If you are using a dough machine, you can add a bit of water as well. After the first rise, it will look like this:
I like to place the ball of dough on a baking sheet and let it rise for about 30 minutes. Then I place it on the counter and cover it with plastic wrap. Let it rest for another 30-45 minutes before rolling out the balls. When the rolls are rolled out, they will have a nice soft texture. They will also be slightly sticky. These rolls will take about 10-15 minutes to rise and rise again. As soon as the roll is ready, I remove it from its plastic wrapping and place them on an ungreased baking tray. Place the tray on top of a large baking pan and bake for 10 minutes or until the tops are golden brown. Remove the pan from heat and allow the pans to cool completely. While the sheets are cooling, make your filling. In a medium bowl, combine the egg yolks, sugar, and vanilla. Add the flour and mix until well combined. Pour the filling into the prepared baking sheets and roll out to about 1/4 inch thickness. Using a rolling pin, roll the sheet into a log. Cut the log into 1-inch pieces and transfer them to a plate. Repeat with the remaining sheets. Bake the cookies for 15-20 minutes, or for as long as you like. Allow to sit for 5 minutes and remove from oven. Cool completely before cutting. To make a frosting, place a 1 1 /2 cup of powdered sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to boil and cook for 1 minute. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 2 minutes until sugar is dissolved and the sugar has dissolved completely in water. Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Strain the syrup into your bowl and add it to your frosted cookies.
