Can Magnesium Lower Calcium Levels

Magnesium plays a role in calcium homeostasis. Magnesium deficiency may result in clinically significant hypocalcemia. The aim of this pilot study was to determine whether magnesium therapy has an effect on hypothalaemia in hypoparathyroid patients. At a referral center for endocrine disorders, we conducted randomized, two-phase, uncontrolled treatment trial. Participants were treated with oral magnesium (350 mg/d) for three weeks, followed by two weeks of therapy. Participants had normal plasma magnesium levels with normal calcium and vitamin D analogs. Patients with normal calcium levels were treated for two weeks.
