Magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) antagonize each other in (re) absorption, cell cycle regulation, inflammation, and several other physiological functions. Only a few studies have looked at the correlation between magnesium and calcium intakes and breast cancer survival. We investigated the connection between intakes of these two minerals and survival in a cohort of 1,170 women with primary and histologically confirmed breast cancer from Western New York State. After adjusting for known prognostic factors and intakes of caffeine, total vitamin D, and total calcium, a rise in dietary magnesium intake was inversely correlated with risk of all-cause mortality.
