, a research team led by Dr. David Ludwig, MD, of the University of California, San Francisco, and Drs. Michael J. Buss, PhD, MPH, Dragan M. Kuzmin, MSc, MS, David Jolliffe, MA, Michael A. Sacks, DVM, Robert Auerbach, JD, John Anderton, BS, James Atherton-Smith, BA, Richard Aylward, BScD, Peter Aul, MBBS, Daniel Aufderheide, MBA, Paul Auld, Ph.D., and David Ault, DO, conducted a study to determine if zinc supplementation could lower blood pressures in patients with type 2 diabetes. The study was published in Diabetes Care. In the study, the researchers used a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design to compare the effects of zinc and placebo on blood lipids, blood volume, systolic blood flow, diastolic and diaphragmatic pressure, fasting blood sugars, insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance, body weight, waist circumference, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. They also compared the effect of a zinc supplement with a placebo supplement on the risk of developing type 1 diabetes in a large, prospective study. Results showed that the zinc group had a significantly lower risk for developing diabetes compared to the placebo group. “We found that zinc was associated with lower levels of blood lipid levels in both the group receiving the supplement and the control group,” said Dr Ludwig. He added, “The results of this study suggest that a combination of dietary zinc, including zinc-rich foods, may be beneficial for patients who are at increased risk.”
The study also found a significant reduction in blood triglyceride levels after the supplementation. This is important because triglycerids are a major risk factor for type II diabetes and are associated to a higher risk to develop heart attack and stroke. Dr Buxbaum said, “[T]he results suggest a potential benefit of supplementation with zinc in type-2 diabetes.” The researchers also noted that there was a reduction of triglycerid levels by about 10 percent in those who received the combination zinc plus
