The first line of the poem is a description of a scene in the garden of an old man. The second line is the description that follows. In the first, the man is describing the scene, in this poem, he is talking about the flowers. He is saying that they are beautiful, and that he has seen them before. But in his description, there is no mention of flowers, only of his own garden. This is because the poet is not describing a garden, but a place, which is in fact a house. It is also because he does not mention the flower, because it is already in bloom. So the second poem has a different meaning. Here, we have a man who is speaking about a flower. And in order to describe the beauty of that flower he must describe it in detail. We can see this in a few lines. First, it says, “I saw the roses, I saw them in their bloom, they were beautiful.” Then it goes on to say, “…and I have seen the same flowers before, so I know that I must have been there.” This means that the words “before” and “in bloom” are used in different ways. They are not used together. When we say “the same” we are saying “that is what I was there for.” When “they were” is used, then we mean that there was a time when there were flowers in that garden and they have bloomed. Then we use the word “and” to mean “there was” or “it was.” So, when we speak of “a garden” in poetry, what we really mean is “an old house.”
In the third line, this is where the meaning of this line changes. Now, if we look at the original poem we can clearly see that it does have flowers and it has bloom in it. However, now we see the “old house” as a metaphor for the world.

“I have a very good friend, a man of great reputation, who is a great lover of music, and who has a beautiful daughter, whom he loves very much. He has been a musician for many years, but he has not been able to make himself master of his instrument, for he is very weak, so that he cannot play well. I have been very kind to him, as I am sure he will be a good lover to me. But I must tell you that I cannot give him the pleasure of seeing me, because I do not know how to play the instrument. You must give me the opportunity of playing it, or else I shall not be able.”

[The following is the text of the letter:]
“I am very sorry to hear that you have not yet been pleased with the performance of your daughter. She is not only very beautiful, she is also very clever, very intelligent, with a talent for music. Her father is an excellent musician, he plays the violin, the harp, etc., and he also plays a violin. His daughter is quite a child, yet she has the talent of being a singer, which is something very rare in a girl. It is true that she does not like to sing, nor does she like the music of her father, though she loves it very well, nevertheless she cannot sing well enough to be of any use to you. If you are not pleased, I will not give you the chance of hearing her. However, if you do give her the possibility of singing, you must not forget that it is only a chance, it does nothing for you, only for her, that is all. Do not let her be disappointed, do everything you can to please her.”
