u college dublin, and the first time I heard it was at a party in Dublin. I was in my early twenties, I had just moved to Dublin from London, but I’d been living in London for a few years. It was a very different time, it wasn’t as big as it is now, there was no internet, so I didn’t have a lot of friends. But I remember being in the pub with my friends and I’m sitting there and there’s this guy who’s just sitting on the floor, he’s got a beer in his hand, his face is red, you know, like he just got drunk. And I just remember thinking, “Oh my God, this is the guy I’ve been looking for.” And then I started to sing along to it, because I knew I could sing it.
And then it just went on and on. So I went to a couple of gigs, one in Belfast and one at the O2 in Glasgow, which was the biggest gig I ever did. The O1 was packed, the crowd was huge, they were all singing along, everyone was singing the song. Then I got to the gig in Edinburgh, where I played the opening gig, a gig that was sold out. That was my first gig where people were singing it and it went up on YouTube. People were just singing, people weren’t even paying attention to what was going on, just listening to me sing. They were like, ‘Oh, that’s the one.’ And it’s like a song that you can’t really explain, really. You just know it when you hear it because it goes on for so long. There’s a bit of a lull in there, then you’re like ‘Ah, yeah, here we go.’
