The book is a collection of essays by the late author, who died in 2011. The essays are written in a style that is reminiscent of his earlier work, but with a more contemporary twist. He wrote the essays in the style of a young adult novel, with the author’s name and age attached to each essay. In the essay “The End of Time,” for example, the narrator, a teenager named Alex, writes:

I am a writer. I am writing a novel. It is not a story. And it is about the end of time. Alex is writing it. She is the protagonist. Her name is Alex. We are all Alexes. But we are not all the Alexe. There are others. They are the ones who are writing the story, writing Alex’s story and Alex herself. These are our friends. Our family. My family, my friends, our family and my family’s family are Alexs. This is our story. Alex has written it, Alex wrote it and now it’s time to end it. We have to stop writing. Stop writing, stop reading. You have written this story for us. Now stop. Let it end. End it now. ”

Alex’s essay is one of many that appear in The End Of Time. Other essays include “A Tale of Two Cities,” “I Am Not a Hero,” and “My Life Is a Story.”
“The end is near,” the title of one essay reads. Another reads, “We are in our last days. Time is running out. All we have left is to live.” (pp. 6-7) The book’s title is an allusion to the famous line from the film The Matrix: “Time is up, everyone.” The title also references the movie’s opening scene, in which the main character, Neo, is shown walking through a desert. Neo is seen walking in front of an enormous, glowing, red, sun-like object. As he walks, he is surrounded by a group of people, all of whom are wearing the Matrix’s symbol. (The Matrix is also known as the “Matrix of Solitude.”)
